Speed (1994) Analysis — GC #316

Episode 316 of the GenreCast continues the marathon of The Man Called Keanu. Last week, we discussed River's Edge, this week, we're talking all about the 1994 action hit, Speed. Super Mario Bros. (1993) Analysis — GC #314

It's a post-snapture episode of the GenreCast. We hope you enjoyed last week's journey into the multiverse, but this week we're back on Earth Prime as Dalton, Arthur and Dustin take up the ladies' challenge of Super Mario Bros. The 1993 film is often discussed as one of the worst movies of all time, and a terrible starting point for video game adaptations. The boys have a much more positive reaction, often going to bat for the film. This week, we examine the film's politics, Daisy's role, adapting video games and much more. Captain Marvel (2019) Analysis — GC #313

In a multiverse far away, your hosts Alexandra, Erin and Kirsten tackle the 21st entry in the MCU: Captain Marvel. With only days remaining before Avegers: Endgame, your fearless hosts tackle the biggest movie of the year, to this point. The GoodTrash crew were very unmotivated to see this one, considering its the TWENTY-FIRST FILM in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The gang talks female friendship, how the film targets the wrong crowd, the problematic issues that arise in its attempted solutions, problems in the narrative, gaslighting and much, much more. The Mummy (1999) Analysis — GC #312

In Episode 312, the boys turn back the clock 20 years to talk 1999's The Mummy. The Brendan Fraser vehicle was a massive success spawning two different franchises. It also features Rachel Weisz in one of her first major roles—a great starting point for a wonderful career. Arthur, Dalton and Dustin have a great time breaking this one open. The Hollywood machine, consumerism and consumption, Brendan Fraser, movie franchises, homage and style are all featured talking points in this week's analysis of The Mummy. Faces Places (Visages Villages) Analysis — GC #310

We wrap up our Women's Appreciation Month mini-marathon with Agnes Vardas' Faces Places (Visages Villages). The celebrated documentary from Varda and visual artist JR is a buddy-comedy documentary. The two artists tour around the French countryside capturing the lives of those who make the world go round. We rarely talk documentary, so we have some fun talking form. We then move into the ideology of the work and explore the social elements at play. We also continue to expand the syllabus as we finally start to find our footing with the new format. Wayne's World Analysis — GC #309

The GenreCast continues to march through March and the Women's Appreciation Marathon. This week, we're tackling Penelope Spheeris' Wayne's World, starring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey. The popular SNL-sketch-turned-film was a cultural touchstone for many Gen-Xers and cusp millennials. And, we're making this a family affair as Dalton's sister, Carissa drops by to talk about one of the Stuart children's favorite films growing up. We crank it to 11, and drain all of the jelly-filled analysis from Wayne's World. Get into it! 

Pet Sematary (1989) Analysis — GC #308

The GenreCast is back and we're joining in on the Women's History Month celebration. This week, we're taking a look at Mary Lambert's Pet Sematary adaptation from 1989. Stephen King's darkest novel made for a cult hit, but does the horror hold up after all these years? We find out. To help us through this, we invited along our very own Frightful Femme, Kirsten Therkelson. We also continue ironing out the kinks in our new format. Blade Runner (1982) The Final Cut Analysis — GC #307

Episode 307 of the GenreCast sees the team returning to a normal schedule, at least for this week. Blade Runner has oft been tossed around as a potential subject for the show, and due to recent personal circumstances, it finally landed. Ridley Scott's Blade Runner is available in numerous formats, most notably the theatrical cut (with voiceover), the director's cut and Blade Runner The Final Cut. Blade Runner The Final Cut is the authorized restoration by Ridley Scott without the controversial voice over or Hollywood ending. During this week's episode, the team not only analyzes Blade Runner The Final Cut, but also shakes things up in presentation.
