It is the dawn of a new era, Dear Listener. The era of the Randomizer AB1700 which holds the fate of this show in its hands. On general months, the Randomizer will be used to fill out programming except in the case of Patron or Host picks. Each of the hosts has selected a number of titles to place in the Randomizer. That being said, the Randomizer has given us Cloud Atlas to kick of April.

That's right, we take a look at the underrated Wachowski/Tykwer cross-generational sci-fi film lead by Tom Hanks and Halle Berry in a number of roles. To go along with this weeks movie and the vast amount of Tom Hanks, we decide to highlight our favorite Tom Hanks films.

As the show continues, we move into analysis and Dalton gets the ball rolling. This week, Dalton brings up the idea of the flexibility of race and gender; discussing how we are all people, and how the Wachowski Sisters deal with those ideas of humanity, soul, and personhood. Caleb tags in and builds off of Dalton's analysis; however, he introduces the idea of stories and they transcend time, space, and culture and can impact generations to come. Alex takes the floor after Caleb and discusses the power of music. This is a very art appreciation heavy show as Alex discusses the power of music, and analyzes how music works both in the diegesis and non-diegesis of the film. Dustin, being Dustin closes out the Analysis section by bringing up questions of philosophy and looking at it through a Nietzschian lens. Sadly, Dear Listener, our Brig-a-thon must come to a close. The Anime Express rolls into the station as we go full circle and take a look at The Wind Rises. The Wind Rises marks the end of an era as it is Hayao Miyazaki's final film at Studio Ghibli. A studio that launched thanks to the success of his 1984 work, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind -  which we discussed to kick off this marathon.

Sorry for the spiel, now back to business. This week on the show, the table is nearly empty as Dustin and Caleb are the only two who survived to the final week of Anime. Our fearless hosts do play a game this week, as they talk about their favorite dream sequences in film. They both show a breadth of knowledge as they cite films from multiple decades. We then move into analysis. Caleb takes an auteur approach, discussing how Miyazaki is reflected in the film's main character and how it has a lot to say about the state of current Anime trends. Caleb postures that Miyazaki is putting current Anime trends on blast for what they've become. Dustin then takes the reigns and discusses The Wind Rises as a left-leaning work that criticizes militarization and war.

The Month of Brig keeps rolling here at the GenreCast as we take a look back at 1995's influential anime, Ghost in the Shell. That's right, because he is a Patron and pledged the right amount, Brigham Cole has sentenced us to a month of Anime. Something never explicitly mentioned on air was the reasoning behind our selections. We wanted to embrace influential or highly regarded Anime from each decade to examine the growth and evolution of the beloved style of filmmaking. We started with Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) since it is the seed for what would become Studio Ghibli. Alex then selected Summer Wars (2009) because of its thematically rich plot and reputation. We then chose Ghost in the Shell (1995) because of its influence on Hollywood cinema.

This week, we kick things off with our game and talk about our favorite Action Movie Scores. This movie has a fantastic score that drives the action, so we thought we'd celebrate by highlighting some of our other faves. Do you have any scores you think we overlooked? Let us know in the comments below! We then take Ghost in the Shell to the operating table and try to uncover what's really going on. Alex brings up the age old question, SUB vs DUB! That's right, she discusses a bit of adaptation theory involving subtitles and how a films original message or intent can sometimes be misinterpreted through translation. Caleb then takes over with a discussion of sentience and ethics and how Ghost in the Shell discusses that philosophy. Dalton then pans the film over its ridiculous use of the male gaze which completely kills any goodwill that the movie may earn. He essentially states the any potentially good idea about gender or sexuality is quickly tripped up by the camera's incessant oogling of the female form. Dustin then piggybacks off of Caleb's analysis to discuss sentience and humanity and what makes a person a person. And while the movie didn't get generally favorable reviews from the table, it jumpstarts great discussion across the board.

This week, after giving our initial reviews, we discuss Saturday Morning Cartoon Mashups that we would love to see. That's right, we'd be just as excited for an X-Men '92/TMNT crossover as you would be. Caleb cranks it to 11 for his choices and a great deal of fun is had by all.

Finally, we move into the portion of the show that you all came for; we get down to business and break open Summer Wars to find out what's going on behind the firewall of Oz. Alex kicks things off as she uses her education to great affect, talking e-governance and government policy and how Summer Wars takes a look at all of that. Caleb takes the reigns next to talk about Eastern Religion and the Internet. He discusses how the internet has taken philosophies from Shinto and Buddhism and taken them world wide, for the better. Dustin then takes things home to talk about the influence of Yasujiro Ozu (Tokyo Story) on Summer Wars; this leads him to discuss the integration of art house style on anime.

Hello everybody, March is upon us and that means it is a very special time here at the GoodTrash Media Network because we get to honor our first ever Patreon rewarded marathon of shows. That's right, if you give us the right amount of money, you can get choose a marathon for us to program, watch, and talk about. This is your best chance of telling us what to do and when to do it. The very fist Patron who has stepping up to the challenge is Mr. Brigham Cole. Brigham has always been a big supporter of the show, and he took that a step further by pledging. In doing so, he pledged at a level which awarded him with what we're calling The Brigha-Thon! All through March, thanks to Brigham, we are going to be looking at Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind which would put a director by the name of Hayao Miyazaki on the map and lead to the founding of one of the most influential animation studios on the planet, Studio Ghibli.

To kick off this marathon, we talk about our favorite animated heroines. For the first time ever, Alex could  hardly be contained and nearly spent the entire episode listing characters. I'm only half joking. From there, Dustin leads a round table discussion which addresses many of the topics within the films, including a look at the film's ecological, political, cultural, and feminist messages.

Ladies and Gentlemen, our time with the Fresh Prince must come to an end after we take a look at Wild Wild West. That's right, this week we close out our marathon with a look back at the 1999 flop starring Will Smith, Kevin Kline, and Kenneth Branagh. And this week, we're joined by GoodTrash Media's very own Frightful Femme, Kirsten Therkelson who was extremely excited to discuss one of her favorite guilty pleasure movies. This week, we give our reviews and then we discuss our favorite Movies Based Off of TV Shows. That's right, Wild Wild West is an adaptation of the TV Show of the same title, and we thought it would be fitting to rattle off some of our favorites that have their roots in the small screen.

Finally, we get down to business as we bring a wealth of analysis to Wild Wild West. Caleb kicks things off with a discussion of Steam Punk and the history of that particular genre and aesthetic. He traces the cinematic roots of the style in a very thorough discussion. Alexandra then takes over with a look at Will Smith himself as she discusses how his most important and prominent roles have all been a play on the Fresh Prince character and persona that he developed so early in his career. Dalton then gives us a socio-historic history lesson as he discusses the Reconstruction period following the Civil War and some of the misconceptions that are presented and encouraged by Wild Wild West of that time. Kirsten then gives us a run down of cult cinema, and discusses how Wild Wild West misses the mark in terms of finding a place within the realm of cult cinema. Dustin finally takes us home by piggy backing off of Alex's reading as he discusses the star as auteur and how that helps us understand film a bit more.

The taxi to Bel Aire keeps rolling along, and this time we visit the Prince in the latter part of his career with a look at the con-man romance, Focus. The movie is nothing like the synopsis on IMDb or HBO Go would have you believe. In fact, it's really a film made of two stories, and the first one is mucher better than the second. But, we do what we always do as we take Will Smith's Focus to the analysis table. 

Before the analysis can begin however, we sit around the table to talk about some of our favorite plot twists in film. So, beware, there may be spoilers for movies you haven't seen. It's a fun conversation as Caleb tries to upset Dustin with mentions of Rosebud. 

This week, Dalton, Caleb, Alex, and Dustin discuss several key issues and ideas based around the production of Focus. Dalton and Alex wind up tag teaming the film as they discuss age discrepancies and feminism. The idea of the recent Twitter hit Ross Putnam and FemScriptIntros comes up as they discuss the sexism that is rampant in Hollywood filmmaking as well as Hollywood's lolita complex. Caleb then discusses Hollywood and American Culture's interest in Byronic characters; mentioning that this film further enforces the idea of the byronic hero as someone we should back and support. Dustin then wraps things up with a look at how the film can be viewed as a neo-noir. He goes into great detail about the formal aspects and the stylistic flourishes which allow this film to stand out before highlighting it as a modern take on a studio era, factory made film.

Fresh Prince February rolls on as Dustin, Alex, and Caleb gather back around the table to discuss Dustin's host pick, The Legend of Bagger Vance. Dustin continues his cause as the positive supporter of Will Smith's work this week as the reaction is definitely mixed around the table. 

In keeping with the new format, we do our quick reviews and then jump in an interesting discussion about Voice Over Narration. The gang then discusses some memorable and favorite uses of the technique. Next, we get down to business as we begin to analyze The Legend of Bagger Vance. Alex provides a discourse on sports and pop culture and ties all of that in with ideas of storytelling. Caleb is next, and he provides a look at the story trope of the "Magical Negro" and why it is more problematic than normal in Bagger Vance. Dustin closes things out this week with a look at the film's stance on the environment and how Robert Redford's beliefs shine through. 

It's an interesting show this week as we talk Bagger Vance with plenty of juicy discussion around the table. So, tee up and hit play... FORE!

Grab your garlic and your crosses, Fresh Prince February kicks off with a look at 2007's blockbuster horror-action film, I Am Legend. That's right, we jump into the peak of Will Smith's career to tackle his end-of-days vampire picture which sees him trying to find a cure for the undead to restore some semblance of civilization.

This week, Arthur, Dalton, Caleb, and Dustin gather around the table to get Fresh Prince February off the ground. Reactions to the film vary quite a bit, well not so much, but one person in particular is disappointed that I Am Legend wasn't more loved. As the new format takes shape, we follow our reviews up with our game. This week we discuss some of our favorite or most interesting star vehicles - those movies designed to bolster a movie stars career or re-launch their career. Following the game, we move into analysis. Dalton takes a shot at the studios and Hollywood as he discusses the two endings for I Am Legend, and why the theatrical cut makes it a very problematic film. Caleb picks this train of thought up and runs with it as he segues into a discussion of the Savior/Martyr complex and how I Am Legend seems to be deconstructing it. Dustin then brings things home with a look at the films discourse of capitalism and politics and how that interacts with radical theology and concludes that loving communities are a starting point for a more peaceful world.
