That's right, this week we're discussing the 2002 revenge thriller that led us to Oldboy. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is the first in a spiritual trilogy of revenge tales that engage with the cycles of violence that we find ourselves in and fascinated by. Ryu needs money, so he kidnaps Mr. Park's daughter—a move that will lead both men down a path to revenge. The title is a mouthful and the movie is a lot, but we have a good time doing our best opening this one up for analysis. We start unofficially getting into the layers in our review section, which then carries over into our Syllabus Expansion and finally business time. We've also got notes from our beloved Alexandra Bohannon who was going to be on this week, until her schedule got shaken up at the last minute. But, prepare us she did. This week, Dalton coins the term "Rainbow Face" to allude to a cisgender and/or heterosexual performer playing outside their identified spectrum. We also get into questions of race, as well as economics. Dustin also spends time analyzing Sheriff Dollard as well.
