As awards season moves full steam ahead, we're back with week two of AntiTrash 2020. As Arthur's shenanigans also continue, we look at a movie from TWENTY years ago. That's right, we're looking at Ang Lee's international smash hit Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. One of the few non-English language international films to really penetrate the American market place, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon inspired new affection for the wuxia genre, paving a pathway for several international hits in the years to follow. This tale of honor, responsibility, forbidden love, and cool swords is sure to strike your fancy. We talk all about honor and responsibility, Freud, and the Wuxia genre. And Arthur's gone off the deep end with conceptual marathons this month. Each week, he's picking movies that have a tie to the number 20. And we're starting with a movie from 1920! That's right, we're talking about the horror classic of German Expressionism. And, a bonus gift, this is the first silent film Dalton has ever seen in full! As our 2019 retrospective begins winding down, Arthur kills the mood by choosing Jennifer Kent's follow up to The Babadook, The Nightingale. This Tasmanian period piece is a brutal, realistic take on the revenge thriller. Kent crafts a beautiful film that is increasingly harder and harder to watch. This week, we take a look at the three big Es on the eye chart: racism, colonialism, and assault. Before any of that business, we expand our syllabus and break down what we like and don't like about the movie.

Hello! Happy December! We're back after eating all the turkey to continue our 2019 retrospective. This week, we're looking at Dalton's pick, The Kid Who Would Be King. Joe Cornish made a little splash with what has become a cult hit in Attack the Block. But, its been EIGHT years since that little cult hit came out. And he's back with an adolescent take on King Arthur lore. This week, we talk all about nationalism, King Arthur, absent fathers, and chosen ones. The GenreCast 2019 Retrospective continues this week with Dustin's blind bag special: Kill Chain. This Nicolas Cage-starring noir-inspired thriller attempts to pull off a gimmicky narrative wherein a number of hit men, spies, and assassins try to make it through a night in an unknown town in Colombia. The little known straight-to-streaming film is Cage's seventh collaboration with Millennium films. On this week's episode, we get into what noir means to us, looking at mode, style, and genre. We spend time discussing form and function of film. We also get into a discussion of the film's gimmick and if it works or not. But, before all of that, we expand the syllabus to discuss B-tier trash movies, studio cycles, and Baroque Noir. Tune in now!
