It's a massive episode 300 as we set sail with one of the biggest movies of all time, Titanic. James Cameron's landmark romantic epic was the first film to cross the $1 Billion mark, and it stayed at the top of the box office for a record 15 weeks. It was a pop culture phenomenon that earned 11 Oscar Wins and 14 Total Nominations. One of the most highly recognized films of the modern era, Titanic is a juggernaut in many ways. So, what bigger movie to celebrate 300 episodes with than Titanic. In honor of 300, we bring in voices from the past, including Alex Bohannon, Caleb Masters, Kirsten Therkelson, Heath Huffman and a supernatural appearance from Nick Sanford. We skip the game this week to fully delve into the material, we talk meme culture, try to analyze GoodTrash and the prestige that surrounds Titanic. Our western walkthrough continues as we go... *checks notes* east today. Huh. That's right, we're bringing our trademark style of analysis to Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo. It's the story of a lone wolf rolling into town to capitalize on chaos between two warring families—so, it's definitely a western. It also serves as the inspiration for the Clint Eastwood/Sergio Leone classic, A Fistful of Dollars, which we covered on the show on episode #218. This week, we take Yojimbo to the analysis table to discuss the genre, transposing the story, define art house cinema, and discuss the cult of branding. Our look back at 2018 continues with Arthur picking cult-hit Mandy, in episode 295. For the second time Panos Cosmatos appears on the GenreCast. A few years earlier, we tackled Beyond the Black Rainbow. Knowing his background and considering the lead casting of Nicholas Cage, this quickly became one of Arthur's most highly anticipated films of 2018. Couple that with a blink-and-you-miss it theatrical run in Oklahoma, Arthur knew what had to be done. In this episode, we're joined by GoodTrash's own Frightful Femme Kirsten Therkelson. With 2019 just a few short weeks away, we have to start plotting our "Best of 2018" lists. To do so, we need to fill some blind spots. For the next three weeks, each host is picking a 2018 release that they missed out on. Dustin kicks things off with the Netflix Original film Outlaw King. David Mackenzie's followup to the lauded Hell or High Water tells the story of Robert the Bruce (Chris Pine) and his efforts to regain control of Scotland from English rule. With a high budget and noted production history, we ponder the point of Outlaw King. Sly Stallone and Wesley Snipes face off in this sci-fi, fish-out-of-water action-comedy... Yeah, it has a lot going on. Danger, danger, it's Lost in Space (1998). That's right, we go where no one wants to go—the Matt LeBlanc vehicle from 1998. With a Long John Silver tie in, a bizarre CGI space monkey and Akiva Goldsman penning the script, we determine how well Lost in Space holds up. After quick reviews, we play our weekly game. This week, we highlight 90s TV Series that deserve adaptations—Arthur goes down a rabbit hole of shows that apparently Dalton and Dustin never heard of.
