Thursday Mar 19, 2020
Song of Praise continues this week with a look at Bong Joon-ho's monster hit, The Host from 2006. The story of a father chasing a sea mutant in order to get his daughter back hits many of the marks of a Bong Joon-ho film, including economic displacement, class struggle, and human interaction. It also tacks on economic factors focusing on the what if based on real life events following the dumping of chemicals by American forces. We're tapping into all of those big Es on the eye chart, before diving into a discussion of how the film functions as a monster movie, while also discussing its subversions of the genre. Ep. 355: To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995)
Thursday Feb 20, 2020
Thursday Feb 20, 2020
On episode 355 of the GenreCast, we're crossing the country with style and flare. The movie? To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar. The title is a mouthful and the movie is a lot, but we have a good time doing our best opening this one up for analysis. We start unofficially getting into the layers in our review section, which then carries over into our Syllabus Expansion and finally business time. We've also got notes from our beloved Alexandra Bohannon who was going to be on this week, until her schedule got shaken up at the last minute. But, prepare us she did. This week, Dalton coins the term "Rainbow Face" to allude to a cisgender and/or heterosexual performer playing outside their identified spectrum. We also get into questions of race, as well as economics. Dustin also spends time analyzing Sheriff Dollard as well. As three cis white men, we know it's not completely in our realm, but we do our best to analyze and discuss To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar. Enjoy!
